Samsung i8910HD Gold announced, comes soon to Europe and Middle East

As we all know, designing a successful smartphone nowadays takes much more effort than it used to even a year ago. This time last year we had no iPhone 3GS, no HTC Hero, not even a single proper image of Palm Pre. Android was just raising his green head and Nokia hasn't yet sold a million of 5800s. Despite all that and considering the fact that Christmas time sales craze should start very soon, managers at Samsung decided they can do without revamping hardware and adding more functionality to software but replace some body panels. Body panels in question are from Samsung i8910HD, also known as OmniaHD, and they are substituted by golden ones.

I always thought of Samsung i8910HD as a good social networking mobile phone for youths. A fair Sidekick LX rival with its full physical QWERTY but more humble camera and price tag. No matter, replacing plastic with gold should make i8910HD Gold more appealing to… whom? Come to think of it, if I was on the market with my own money in search for a premium class mobile phone I'd walk straight to Nokia booth and grabbed something from 8xxx series, preferably an Erdos. For the last five years it was a yardstick for premium class cell phones. I'd consider i8910HD Gold as a present only. Yes, it's flashy and glamorous. I do like Champagne Gold styling, Luxury Brown is not so pretty by me, but you still get a leather case for it. For those interested, Samsung i8919HD sales will start soon in Europe and Middle East.

The origins of hacking grow from healthy enthusiasm to add functionality to hardware by tweaking program code. So this is not the case. Samsung Instinct vs. iPhone 3G: which one will be better?

It's not only the battle of two devices it is the battle of two cell phone services providers: Sprint and AT&T. These two phones will be their best and most powerful presenters that they have. iPhone 3G is not out yet but AT&T was successfully selling the previous versions of iPhone for almost a year now. So some people love AT&T and other love Sprint and it's their choice. What we are going to do is compare the features of the two phones.

First of all let's do the comparison of the exterior of Samsung Instinct and iPhone. Instinct is made mainly of plastic which is not that neat today; iPhone has pats made of metal and harden glass to prevent it from scratching.

As to AT&T vs. Sprint there are some advantages and disadvantages; but concerning these phones Sprint is giving very high internet speeds and music store from any point of coverage. AT&T's iPhone can only connect to iTunes store via Wi-Fi, which restricts it to the city limits. Besides, everybody knows about Samsung Instinct's and iPhone's GPS capabilities.

I personally liked the voice control on Samsung Instinct; however not sure if it would work as good as they demonstrate it, so train your speech to be able to control it.
I'm not sure if it was a good idea to have the keyboard only in landscape mode. My personal opinion is that I want to choose what mode to use because it really frustrates me that I need to turn it every time I want to input some text.

One more thing that I love about Instinct is its open platform. I really like to install and use the software I choose. iPhone has made a pretty good job on giving positive experience for the customers but it is closed platform.

Another good thing about Instinct is that they give an additional battery and an external battery charger, which can be very helpful during traveling.

iPhone should be twice as fast in web browsing as the old iPhone is. It supports Bluetooth, GPRS, GSM, EDGE, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, UMTS connectivity and that's what they are proud about. One of the biggest news: it will be able to give you 3G video talks with your friends.

One other big news is that Apple is going to allow third party applications on their iPhone but only those that are approved by them. Not sure how popular that will be. Apple has done a pretty good job on the user interface. And the question I have is: "Will the third party applications be free or they are going to charge the customers for that?" The platform it is running on is Mac OS X Mobile which should bring the customers best experiences.

In the rest of features the iPhone 3G will be just as its predecessor (one of the best phones out there.) It will roll out on July the 11th in 70 countries of the world. The 8GB version will cost $199 and the 16GB version will cost $299.

BrainPort to offer a new visual experience

For those people who are visually impaired it seems to be possible to see the world. The interesting thing is that a new vision is provided not by eyes but using their tongues. Named BrainPort, this useful gadget announced in 2006 for the first time now offers a special camera making it possible to see the objects surrounding blind people.

The BrainPort is designed to send electrical signals taken by a head mounted camera. This wonder working device makes it possible for blind people to be able to read large text. The camera of this high tech device is capable of taking pictures and delivers them to the base unit to be able to decipher signals received.

Once the signals are converted into electrical impulses, the user’s tongue will feel some shivering. However, depending on sensational threshold, blind people can adjust the tongue’s response. This smart vision device is expected to be available next year if everything goes as planned with an expected price tag of 10 000 USD.

I have seen many different Cooler Fans With built in LED lights. They had different colors and shapes; they had different sizes and other different features. However, I have never seen a cooler Fan like this.

This gadget fan has a unique feature. This feature is that this fan can actually display a phrase that you want. You can even make it display your name or whatever you want. Taiwan scientists from Polo Tech have designed this unique fan.

I put a see-through side panel on my computer case and installed this cool fan on it. Now I can write different phrases and the fan will display them. This fan can also change the color of the phrases, or you can change the size of the letters. It does look very cool at nights because of its bright color lights.

There is one problem though when you buy a cooler like this and this problem is that you need to buy a glass or plastic panel for you PC case in order to see the new fan. Moreover, it will not look as cool if your computer case is under the table or somewhere where you cannot see it.

On the other hand, you can install it on the outside of the case as my friend did. I think that we will soon see the new gadget fans that will not only be able to display phrases but they will be able to display pictures too.

New at Verizon Wireless: Samsung Rogue and Samsung Intesity

Verizon Wireless has announced availability of two new Samsung messaging phones. The cheaper model is Samsung Intensity. This one is a straight forward messenger with a sliding side full QWERTY, 1.3 megapixel cam, web and IM capabilities and 29.99 bucks on the tag. The other one, Samsung Rogue, is a whole different mobile phone however. The only thing it has in common with Intensity is a keyboard. Everything else is from a completely different division.

First and the best thing about Rogue is its AMOLED display. A 3.1 inch WVGA touchscreen promises to deliver state-of-art image and blazing response time. Good job Rouge has VCAST video on demand support, video recording and editing features. MicroSD slot limited to 16GB and 3.0 camera seem a bit yesterday, but who wants pictures on the go in hi-res anyway. I have mentioned above messaging trend of both, so AMOLED display, QWERTY and camera, all come on purpose of social networking. Microsoft launches Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2

Microsoft officially announced the Release of Manufacturing versions of Service Pack 2 of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista. The Service Pack 2 includes many updates. For example, one of the updates was support for emerging hardware standards. Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista and for Windows Server 2008 includes a single installer. It make easier the management and installation of SP2.

Let’s look through updates. Windows Vista SP2 became more comfortable to use. Now it includes Windows Search 4.0 for faster searches and native Blu-ray recording. Also SP2 includes Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack and Windows Connect Now. With Windows Connect Now users can set up Wi-Fi connection very easy. And this is not all. Windows Vista SP2 includes support for UTC timestamps in the exFAT file system. It allows users to synchronize file across time zones correctly.

Google Chrome OS vs Jolicloud

Since Google Chrome OS announcement has came down the pipeline from officials, most of reviewers on the web found themselves in tireless trial of opposing Chrome OS to Windows 7, Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Linux (Mint mostly). This all is very interesting and I recon debates will not stop even when Win 7 and Chrome OS will both be out of beta. Yet there could be a point missed in these discussions. Google underlines web orientation of the announced operating system, which in few words means it will do everything perfectly well until you decide to launch an app installed on your netbook, old PC, you name it, rather than using resources of web servers. Windows 7 on the other hand is meant to be everything for everyone. Therefore they are not quite in the same league. So, here is what we are going to do then – stack up Chrome OS with Jolicloud.

Jolicloud leaked in late '08. Tariq Krim, founder of Netvibes don't you know, and his team of two are basically the only people behind the whole project. He was the first to pronounce a lightweight web orientated OS for netbooks. Even though rumors about Google OS have appeared much earlier, right after Google browser has offered faster web experience despite being in beta I think, first official statement goes to Jolicloud. In fact there was no such thing as "web OS" back then (do not mess with Palm webOS). Anyway, what we have here is two operating systems which have in common, well, practically everything:

* Linux kernel

* Open source platform

* Web orientation and custom browsers

* Low system requirements

* Wide compatibility

* Plans for a powerful developer community

That's a rear thing to see so many matches today, isn't it? It might even appear that what we are having here is a great idea of one ripped off by another. I'd be careful here because this is not likely. Still, there are also important distinctions.

Google has the best search engine at the moment and many popular web services along that. This is their territory, this is where they earn money. Making an Internet operating system they are trying to enhance popularity of their prime source of income. Where Jolicloud has emerged from pure desire to give netbooks a needed eased up software environment.

How will these affect their market shares? Well, having larger developer power behind its shoulders, Chrome OS will plausibly have less glitches and bugs and be more flexible, because fixing serious problems is nothing like it is for Tariq Krim and mates. There is also a sense that Google will not lay off and go on and on promoting Chrome OS, and Jolicloud, who knows how they will react to different obstacles, whether they even will. I just can not have the same credence in both.

Jolicloud is now available in Alpha 2b version, that's a 600MB download. Be sure to check availability list before testing it. As a consumer advice though, with which in mind I started this showdown, do not get used to Jolicloud so far – there might something even better cooking. With the whole respect to Tariq Krim, he would be so much better of if he were half a year faster.

Google Chrome 3.0.195.21 stable

New stable version of Google Chrome web-browser now sees the light of the day. I have been playing with 3.0.195.21 for a couple of days now and was glad to find out that all what you got used to in Google Chrome is still right on its place. And there is more added to Google’s ability to not spoil things for more than a year now. New features and impressions after the jump.

Under the hood

Not so much as a feature, but anyway Chrome developers claim to give JavaScript performance 150% boost. It shows immediately if you are an experienced Chrome user but if you aren’t you will probably hardly be able to tell. I mean Chrome 3 is blazingly fast but then it was almost like this since the day one. But not so stable. I personally can point out better Flash performance, which by the way is dropped off if you happen to open a HTML5 page. Its goodies are supported in v3.0.195.21 stable as standard.

User interface

User interface has been added the biggest instantly noticeable amount of improvements. First, there are 28 new themes for the browser starting with minimalistic white skin and ending with funky graffiti. Also a minor but useful improvement can be found in the Omnibox. Now when you start typing a search query or an URL it lets you know where all the suggestions come from like search engine, visited links history, etc. Home screen has also changed. The bookmark list at the right is out, instead we have our thumbs in two rows with four thumbs in each. One thumbnail less than before, but now their order is fully customizable. You can arrange them in a plain and simple list also.

The good

Not a single crash even though it was enthusiastically given rich JavaScript pages and pages with Flash to cope with. Chrome 3.0.195.21 did both hands down. It also loads faster from the click on the desktop.

The (not so) bad

I still miss my ninth thumbnail and I couldn’t really find a better theme and as a result left it with the default one at the end of the day. I also miss my list of bookmarks but the bar above is still there to help.

The new StressWatch, try not to lie

You wearing a wrist watch? What for? I guess you can easily find what time is it on display of a mobile phone, desktop or onboard dial in a car. Wrist watches nowadays are very much of an accessory rather than a necessity, simple as that. But, "let's just add some more functionality to them since they have an advantage of tight contact with human body" Michael Mathis and Gerda Hopfgartner thought and came up with the StressWatch – a watch that shows real time status of your stress.

StressWatch, I'm afraid won't show you time, but who cares if your opponent can see you rage growing while trying to bicker with you. Black graphs on StressWatche's face are stress meters and the colorful background works like a visualizer of current stress state. Green and blue themes say the watch owner is relaxed, dwells in a nice mood and can even possibly fall asleep every moment, while red and orange telltale blush should draw attention of all security guards available to prevent an assault.

StressWatch has a smart sensor on the strap that reads heart rate and body temperature.

I"m thinking now, this could work as perfect excuse to be abrupt and even honest maybe. "Don't ask me now about your tasteless vulgar outfit – I'm stressed out, see?!" Oh yes, you should get away with it if your StressWatch is all bloodshot. Seriously though, it can be a great indicator to know that you are better off taking a taxi rather than driving through crowded city center. Or StressWatch can easily give out lies. Be careful.

Elpida Memory works on 2-Gigabit DDR2 RAM for mobile devices

Computer science was always in the front rows of science fields that achieve fastest growing speeds. But it seems to me that this days computing on the go outpaces computing on the couch. Every now and then you can stumble on a press release that says that someone cut processing time here and double bandwidth there. And now there is Elpida Memory – the company that made its name designing memory modules for all types of computers out there. The latest gadget from them is a 2-Gigabit DDR2 memory module for mobile devices.

In fact, 2-Gigabit (!) mobile RAM bandwidth is probably not the most important characteristic of the latest unit. This could be done by, say, overclocking an old one. But it would be a mess and won’t work properly, would it? What Elpida did is smartly used their 50nm CMOS. This allowed them to achieve speeds up to 800Mbps while keeping power consumption down low. If we put the latest Elpida stick head to head with an average one that is as fast, the last one would use half as much again (1.8V) as Elpida’s 1.2V.

I have started it by saying that speed is not at the top of the heap here. The thing is that there always is a bottleneck somewhere. In mobile devices whether we take smartphones or PMPs, processor is not fast enough, and what’s more important, a very complex OS itself can be a tie. In PCs it’s usually the hard drive. Back to mobile phones and handhelds, 2-Gigabit speed will really shine in a tandem with one of those latest application processors.

LG Chocolate BL20 slider, 5MP camera is best in it

LG Chocolate BL40 has been launched in early September. And now, right this Monday, 28 they have announced new Chocolate series BL20 slider. Is it much like Palm with its Pre and less well equipped Pixi sitting in the pipeline. Only that since Pre has gone cheaper, prices are on the different level. I've brought Palm example because it's the freshest of the case, all manufacturers do the same at some degree. Since LG Chocolate BL20 is not that much of a pump like Pixi, we'll just have a short specs walkthrough. Release of the BL20 is going to happen in Q4 in UK at O2.

Again much like Pixi, Chocolate BL20 lacks Wi-Fi and even 3G. for decent browsing Chocolate slider’s owner will have to find good EDGE signal and take his time. So, the specs: LG Chocolate BL20 stores its widgets on a 2.4 inch 240 x 320 QVGA TFT display, 262K colors. Camera is fairly nice, has Clear Memo Capture feature for better image of handwritten text, graphs or other stuff printed on paper, 5MP, autofocus and flash. I don’t need to indicate this every time anymore, do I? This is average. 900mAh Li-Ion battery provides 450 hours of standby and five hours of talk time. That should be enough since you won’t be browsing the Web too much on it. Internal memory has 60MB as standard and is expandable up to 16GB via microSD slot. We are only waiting for wider availability info. Price in Europe will be 269 EUR.

Samsung i8910 Omnia HD Review: It’s a Media Monster

Samsung has its eyes set on the number one mobile handset manufacturer spot. It has been pumping out handsets by the dozen (almost) recently in its bid to get ahead in that race. While it certainly has been gaining more popularity in recent times, it certainly has a long way to go. With the likes of the iPhone 3GS, the HTC Touch Pro2 and the Palm Pre, it is not going to reach the top spot any time soon. Not to mention the slowly emerging Android phones that are really making their presence felt.

Samsung’s latest attempt is the i8910 Omnia HD phone that has a lot of things going for it. It is a rather large phone. I mean it is positively huge when compared to other phones like it. But is also a phone that packs a lot of punch when it comes to media capabilities. You don’t have to take my word for it really, just look at the AMOLED screen and the HD camera that it comes with. Build

The build of the Samsung i8910 HD is pretty solid. It feels every bit as tough as it ought to be to take regular abuse. The chassis is a large one and weighs more than your average smartphones. However, at 148g it is not heavy enough to make you feel uncomfortable while using it.

Design
The phone has a simple minimalistic design without any extra graphics or accents. There is a chrome ring around the display and the face is mostly taken up by the large 3.7 AMOLED display. The three buttons on the face have a low profile and also chrome finished. The phone has a shiny black finish and the camera is quite prominently displayed on the back along with the flash.
The expansion slot for microSD cards is on the left side of the phone along with the volume keys. The right side has the lock button, the camera key (activate/shutter) and a micro USB port. The top has a covered 3.5mm headphone out.
Display
The display on the Samsung i8910 is actually one of its strong points. You pay for the AMOLED display with the price and the bulk but it is worth it. The bright and vibrant screen brings images and videos to life. Webpages also look great on the screen. However, despite all the talk about AMOLED being really bright, it does not remain very usable under direct sunlight.
The 3.7inch display is a capacitive touchscreen, so it is free from the hang-ups that resistive touch screens like the ones on the Touch Pro2 and the N97 face. The accelerometer works well and the switch is almost immediate. The proximity sensor locks the phone from accidental inputs when it detects that you are holding the phone very close like when you are on a call. The accelerometer is available withinin all the apps.
UI
The TouchWiz interface that was debuted in the earlier touch phones from Samsung, receives an upgrade in the i8910. There is the same tray on the side that allows you to drag and drop apps to your home screen for quick access. Now however, you have two more panels to work with so that your home screen does not get crowded and cluttered. There are also more apps to choose from thanks to the expansion that Samsung has made to the app catalogue.
There is a permanent toolbar that is positioned at the bottom of the screen. It gives you instant access to the phone app, contacts. Text entry can be done via an onscreen keyboard in the landscape mode or through an alphanumeric one in the portrait mode.
Performance

The Samsung i8910 Omnia HD is a media centric device. It has an 8-megapixel camera that can record HD video. The camera has six shooting modes, 14 scene settings and 8 resolutions to choose from. There is also ISO and blink detection. You can also record video in one of the four available resolutions. Features like image correction, white balance and Wide Dynamic range are available while shooting both still and video.
The picture quality of the i8910 is rather impressive. The images shot with the phone are extremely sharp and well defined and the colors are accurate. The richness of the colors could’ve been a bit more pronounced. This can be corrected afterwards though.
Video on the i8910 is also pretty good. The videos come out with great clarity and without too much blurring and pixelation. In bright sunlight however, the video may be overexposed.
The built-in media browser makes for an easy way to browse around for the photos and videos that are present on the phone. The accelerometer lets you browse by tilting the phone left or right. You can also upload directly to social networks like Facebook, MySpace, etc. The DLNA standard is also supported for hooking it up with a TV that has DLNA.
The i8910 supports all the common audio and video formats. So you won’t run short of entertainment on the device. With 5.1 surround sound, an equalizer, sound effects and visualizations, this is one great phone for media applications.

IFA news: Samsung OLED laptop in Q3 '10

About a year ago, we had a fortune to become witness of the first OLED panel going into mass production. Back then it was a hi-tech exhibition, and, well, the story has repeated, almost. Today at the first day of IFA Berlin Samsung’s Head of Worldwide Sales and Marketing, who is Kyu Uhm of course, has given us a deem view of what will be a show stopper in a year – a (first) OLED notebook.

I am not going to speak all about his speech at IFA. Instead, let’s just have a walk through what an OLED display on a notebook can offer and take. One glance back though: Kyu Uhm has mentioned an expected growth of netbook market. In short, what he effectively said was: "We are making an OLED netbook". How good is that? If we think of power consumption, then it makes even more sense than putting an OLED display in a standard-sized laptop. What are main juice lovers in a PC? – screen, hard drive and processor. Same thing with size and weight. Organic diodes are really thin and light. Besides being overly magnificent to behold. So the future of personal computing, which is coming from Samsung in late Q3 of 2010, is a netbook with an OLED panel, SSD and low voltage processor. I like that. If only they give it out for netbook money, which I’m afraid they won’t.

Ever since the early episodes of Star Trek I’ve thought that people would love Captain Kirk’s communication: a pocket-sized device that, as well as supporting simple communication, would give instant access to vast amounts of information. It looks as though we’re getting closer to that ideal. PDAs and smart phones are often built on the same operating system. They both have considerable processing power and battery life and may use a variety of communication system. For example, the Nokia 9500 can communicate via Bluetooth, 802.11b, infrared and UBS as well as GSM, GPRS and Edge technology.

The Nokia 9500 also has enough processing power to handle encoded video. And now there are 3G mobiles that can support higher mobiles data rates and video reception good enough to watch TV.

However, progress is still required on two fonts – processing power and network bandwidth. Moore’s Law should deal with the first problem, but the second is not so straightforward. Present 3G network can provide rates up to about 384kbit/s over a wide area, but this isn’t really enough. However, help is on the way.

In the 3G world, High-speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) will support faster rates, perhaps up to 10bit/s, but at the cost of using a lot using a lot of the cell capacity of the mobile operators. The first system tests will take place next year. The benefit of HSDPA is that it can be added to the existing 3G infrastructure.

A different tack is being taken by the IEEE 802 committee, which has formed a group, called 802.20, to define a standard for high-speed mobile data that will able to support more users per square kilometer than existing system.

It looks as though the new system will rely heavily on adaptive antennas. Each base station will have an array of antennas, allowing it to form multiple radiobeams, one directed at each user. In addition, base station will work together so that several beams intersect at the user’s location, providing a personal sell of good signal that moves with them. Any mobile not in the personal cell will not interfere and so the system’s capacity will be increased.

Some of the techniques being talked about are already available commercially from ArrayComm with its iBrust product, which is being tested in several countries.

The 3G vendors are not ignoring these developments, since 3G system were and new applications to take advantage of the bandwidth.

However, those who dream about the transporter function of the Star Trek communicator will have to wait a good while yet.

New, cheaper ThinkPad USB keyboard released

The ThinkPad UltraNav USB keyboard has been available for some time now and it’s a great way to be able to use that renowned keyboard without having to own a ThinkPad or be on a notebook all the time. The UltraNav is a good product, but at $79 ($99 retail) it was always a bit much, especially considering that it’s a relatively no frills product aimed at emulating the laptop-keyboard experience than moving it over to the desktop.
Now there is a new external ThinkPad keyboard which not only dropped the price down to $59, but that took ThinkPad user feedback into consideration. The keyboard is said to be modeled after the one on the T400s. Just like the new T400s it has the double-height Delete and Escape keys, as well as volume controls above the F keys. And like any newer ThinkPad, the keyboard is spill resistant. Differing from the T400s, the trackpad is gone and users will only have a single cursor control mechanism–the only way to properly control a ThinkPad–the trackpoint.

It’s nice to see Lenovo’s copywriting team acknowledge the keyboard’s “legendary” status, though they seem to have left out any mention of Windows 7 compatibility, which we can assume it has.
In case you are curious, the button at the bottom-left of the keyboard does appear to be the Fn key. This is better suited for notebooks, but the keyboard retains all the ThinkPad’s standard Fn commands when using Windows so it probably made sense to stick with this design.

Lifecasting with Ovi to launch on Nokia N97 mini

Lifecasting with Ovi will allow people to publish their location and status updates to their Facebook account and do so in a very easy way. Users of the application will be able to perform updates from the home screen of their mobile device. Lifecasting will first be offered on the Nokia N97 mini. The Nokia N97 mini is expected to ship in October and will retail for EUR 450. The software will also be available for the Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 mini through Nokia Beta Labs.
This application offers a logical extension of what a lot of people already do on a regular basis. Now they will be able to do it easier by tapping into the GPS capabilities of their mobile device. YouTube to start renting movies?

In Google’s ongoing quest to make YouTube profitable the search giant is currently in discussions with some of the major film studios to start renting streaming movies. If implemented it could mean YouTube becomes one of the top destinations for watching brand new movie releases if users accepted such a service.
The WSJ believes Google are currently talking with three film studios including Sony, Warner, and Lions Gates. No deals have been struck yet, but it is believed YouTube movie rentals would cost $3.99 with content appearing the same day as a DVD/Blu-ray movie release.
The next stage of the process is to test the service internally at Google. Once negotiations with the film studios have ended with a satisfactory agreement Google employees will be the first to test rentals for a period of three months giving both Google and studios time to see whether it is a good fit. For users it means if rentals appear as an option it won’t be until early next year.

When using a laptop it has one clear disadvantage over desktops and that’s screen real-estate. The options range from the tiny 10-inch netbooks to the top-end 17 and 18-inch displays. Lenovo has attempted to offer more screen space with an additional slide-out 10.6-inch display on the W700, and there’s always the option of plugging in an additional display, but that’s not practical if you want to remain portable. But now there may be a solution on the horizon from company gScreen.

The gScreen Spacebook is a conventional laptop, but it has two displays of equal size. That means you can have two 15, 16, or 17-inch screens housed in a portable, yet heavy case. The screens manage to fit inside a standard footprint laptop case as one screen slides behind the other. That does mean the laptop will be thicker, but should still fit inside one of the many laptop carrying cases available. It also has the advantage of giving the user the flexibility of only using one screen instead of two depending on what tasks they are carrying out.

In the future gScreen is planning to go smaller and release a dual 13-inch Spacebook, but to begin with it is expected that military and high-end workstations costing a small fortune will be released before any consumer models are considered. However, gScreen has said it is trying to release before the end of this year and keep the price below $3,000.

Hackers Put Social Networks Such as Twitter in Crosshairs

Web sites such as Twitter are becoming increasingly favored by hackers as places to plant malicious software in order to infect computers, according to a new study covering Web application security vulnerabilities.

Social-networking sites were the most commonly targeted vertical market according to a study of hacking episodes in the first half of the year. The study is part of the latest Web Hacking Incidents Database (WHID) report, released on Monday. In 2008, government and law enforcement sites were the most-hit vertical markets.

Social networks are "a target-rich environment if you count the number of users there," said Ryan Barnett, director of application security research for Breach Security, one of the report's sponsors, which also includes the Web Application Security Consortium.

Twitter has been attacked by several worms, and other social-networking platforms such as MySpace and Facebook have also been used to distribute malware. That's often done when an infected computer begins posting links on social-networking sites to other Web sites rigged with malicious software. Users click on the links since they trust their friends who posted the links, not knowing their friend has been hacked.

The WHID sample set is small, encompassing 44 hacking incidents. The report only looks at attacks that are publicly reported and those with which have a measurable impact on an organization. The WHID's data set is "statistically insignificant" compared to the actually number of hacking incidents, but shows overall attacker trends, Barnett said.

Other data showed how Web sites were attacked. The most common attack was SQL injection, where hackers try to input code into Web-based forms or URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) in order to get back-end systems such as databases to execute it. If the input is not properly validated -- and malicious code ignored -- it can result in a data breach.

Other methods used include cross-site scripting attacks, where malicious code gets push to on a client machine, and cross-site request forgery, in which a malicious command is executed while the victim is logged into a Web site.

The WHID found that defacing Web sites is still the most common motivation for hackers. However, the WHID includes the planting of malware on a Web site as defacement, which also points to a financial motivation. Hacked computers can be used to send spam, conduct distributed denial-of-service attacks and for stealing data.

Security firm Trend Micro has been researching malicious practices on Facebook, and has discovered numerous rogue apps on the social networking site this week. They've been alerting Facebook of them as they find them, but apparently more keep popping up as fast as they are eliminated. Have you experienced security issues on Facebook?

The apps come cleverly disguised as the most effective phishing attacks do. With all of the apps circulating around Facebook, it's got to be hard to keep track of what all are legitimate ones anyway. This means, we are likely going to see a lot of businesses selling goods directly on Facebook. This has the potential to be huge for eCommerce, but security concerns are already one obstacle to successful eCommerce on the web in general. The more reports of malicious happenings regarding Facebook, the more scared people will be to buy goods through the network.

Facebook looks to be going after services like PayPal and Google Checkout in time, with regards to what platform consumers choose to pay for online goods. With the number of Facebook users already so large, and growing steadily, they have a viable shot at giving these services a run for their money.

Consider how often people are already logged into Facebook. They're even taking it with them to other sites via things like Facebook Connect, the Fan Box, etc. There's good reason for people to want to use Facebook to complete online shopping transactions, strictly from the convenience standpoint.

The last form of Yahoo Password stealing is done by using FAKE LOGIN PAGES ..Now wht the **** :-) is Fake login Page ?These are cloned pages of the real Yahoo Mail Sign in pages .They look very similar to the real conterparts and really very difficult to distinguish..Once you put inyour real id and password and press the submit button you will be either redirected to some other pasge /invalid login page but the trick had already been played by this time ..your id and password would have been mailed to the Hackers mail id by using a 3rd party SMTP server and you don't even realize that you are HACKED...
Tip 6: Always view the address bar ..If the address bar shows something like http://mail.yahoo.com or http://edit.login.yahoo.com then its the authentic page but if its something different then DONOT login.
Tip 7: Some older versions of IE support url redirecting for eg: http://mail.yahoo.com.profile=urid.123455@www.hackeme.com Now the former portion seems to be like the authentic yahoo server address but the page is being redirected to www.hackme.com so check out the URL well...
Tip8: Geocities is NOT YAHOO ..So don't get carried away ....

Beside this there's always the fear of Physical Hacking ( Some one can juzz sneak in to see your password while you are typin it ) So be carefull..Some ppl do use Password Changers bt thats similar to Password Crackers which I have mentioned above.. Nokia N97 Review

So, guess what Nokia came up with as a follow up for their Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Touchscreen phone? The Nokia N97, a Google G1 phone look-alike that sports a 3.5 inch touchscreen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Here is a review by cellphone-reviews.co.uk

Design

The Nokia N97 looks like a cross between a lot of different phones from the iPhone to the Google G1 Phone to the AT&T Tilt (HTC TyTN II). Up front, the Nokia N97's 3.5 inch screen dominates the whole front of the phone except for the little button on the bottom left side corner which serves as the shortcut key to the N series multimedia applications. The call and end buttons are touch sensitive like ROKR E8. On the top of the Nokia N97 is the 3.5mm headphone jack and the power button. The Nokia N97 is just a tad bit larger and thicker than the iPhone and when you slide out the QWERTY keypad, you're reminded of the HTC TyTN II with it's angled screen. The Nokia N97 feels solid enough to hold though it just feels a bit too large especially if you have small hands.

The QWERTY keypad is evenly spaced and you won't have trouble typing nor would you have to worry about pressing two buttons at a time. The buttons are very minimal compared with other QWERTY keypads from HTC or Blackberry. I guess this is to make room for the directional pad on the left side. The sliding mechanism feels solid enough though I'm a bit worried about the hinge that connects the screen and the keypad since it looks thin and breakable.

Features and Performance

The performance of the Nokia N97 is based purely on the demo version but I have to say I'm quite impressed. It looks like Nokia has fine tuned the Symbian OS to work well with touchscreen. On the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, you won't get much of the swiping and flicking finger action but they've refined it so that you can get that much out of the Nokia N97. Also, compared with the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic demo version, the Nokia N97 interface is quite fast and responsive. You can barely see any hiccup on the accelerometer transition or when you're navigating the Symbian OS. The user interface on the Nokia N97 is also quite new but is still very user-friendly. Like I said, it's touch optimized and there are a lot of widgets you can play with. The built-in browser also looks promising though I wasn't able to see if it supports YouTube desktop PC version. Scrolling through webpages isn't as smooth and fluid as when you're surfing the Safari Browser on the iPhone but the webpages renders quickly though I don't know if that's because the pages that the person demonstrating the phone is already saved and bookmarked on the phone's memory.

The Nokia N97 also supports TV Out, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, GPS, FM radio, and a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. If the camera on the Nokia N97 is as good as that on the Nokia N95 then I'm sure that the Nokia N97 won't have any problems when it comes to its camera software. The Nokia N97 runs on Quadband GSM networks and supports 3G/HSDPA.

It's just too bad that Nokia decided to go with Resistive touchcreen instead of capacitive like that on the iPhone. I'm sure with a bit of development, they'll be able to come up with a lot of good applications that can make use of capacitive touchscreen.

Outlook

Hmm, looks like Nokia got it right on their second try. I like the Nokia N97 better than their Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and I hope that they'll be able to incorporate the user interface of the N97 on the 5800 XpressMusic though I highly doubt that since the Nokia N97 is aimed at the high end market while the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic borders on the midrange to high-end phone segment. From the looks of the demo version, the Nokia N97 looks promising enough. It's fast and responsive. I don't know what processor or RAM they've used on this device but I guess they were able to make use of the new Symbian OS. All in all, it looks like the iPhone, Google G1 Phone and the Blackberry Storm has a new competitor to watch out for. And knowing that there are a lot of Nokia fanatics, I think that the Nokia N97 will definitely take a large part of the smartphone market.

Samsung Propel - green (AT&T) by Nicole Lee

The name might not indicate it, but the Samsung Propel is one of the latest in a line of AT&T messaging phones (the Pantech Matrix is another one), perhaps as a response to the recent text messaging craze that is sweeping the nation. Equipped with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, the Propel is not a smartphone, but that doesn't mean it's without features. In fact, the Propel's multimedia and 3G offerings are quite compelling, even if we weren't pleased with the keypad design. The Samsung Propel is available for $79.95 with a two-year service agreement and after a mail-in rebate.

Design
The Propel has a similar design to that of the Verizon Wireless Blitz. They both have a somewhat square shape, and both slide up to reveal a QWERTY keyboard. The similarities end there, however. Measuring 3.85 inches long by 2.33 inches wide by 0.58 inch thick, the Propel is much thinner than the Blitz, with a flatter front design. Though it is slightly bowed on the left and right side, the Propel is also much less curvy than its competitor. So while the Blitz appears cute and cuddly, the Propel is more lean and mean.

The Samsung Propel has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

On the front of the Propel is a nice 2.2-inch display with support for only 65,000 colors, which is quite a disappointment by our standards. The screen looks decent enough, but colors looked muted and dull. The menu interface is typical Samsung and is easy to use. You can adjust the backlight time, the dialing font (type, size, color, and background color), brightness, and the menu style.

The navigation array consists of two skinny soft keys, a round toggle with a middle confirmation key, a dedicated text message key, a Clear key, and the Talk and End/Power keys. The round toggle can be pressed in four directions, each of which doubles as four user-defined shortcuts. The middle confirmation key also acts as a shortcut to the Web browser. Though the two soft keys are raised above the surface, the rest of the keys are completely flat (with the exception of the round toggle). We didn't like the feel of the flat slippery keys and would've liked a bit more texture.

The Samsung Propel has a 1.3-megapixel camera lens next to a self-portrait mirror.

Slide the phone open and you'll reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard didn't feel either cramped or roomy; sort of somewhere in-between. The individual keys, however, were small and felt quite slippery--we would've preferred a bit more grip or texture on the keys. Aside from the typical function and Caps/Shift keys, the keyboard also has dedicated keys for the camera, AT&T's Cellular Video service, and the phone's sound profile.

The left spine of the Propel is home to a volume rocker and microSD card slot, while the right spine is home to a charger jack as well as a Shortcuts key. The Shortcuts key toggles between the phone, the messaging menu, the Media Net browser, the music player, and the games and applications folder. When the phone is slid open, you'll find the camera lens and self-portrait mirror on the back.

Features
The Samsung Propel has a generous 1,000-entry phonebook with room in each entry for two phone numbers, an e-mail address, an instant-messaging handle, and notes. You can also organize your contacts by caller groups, or pair them with a photo or one of 11 polyphonic ring tones for a customized ring. Other essentials include a vibrate mode, a speakerphone, text and multimedia messaging, an alarm clock, a calendar, a to-do list, a notepad, a calculator, a tip calculator, a unit converter, a world time clock, a timer, a stopwatch, and a voice recorder. On the higher end, you also get a wireless Web browser, stereo Bluetooth, mobile e-mail, instant-messenger support (AOL, Windows Live, and Yahoo) and A-GPS. Because of the A-GPS feature, the Propel comes with AT&T Navigator, AT&T's turn-by-turn direction service.

The Propel is a 3G/HSDPA phone, meaning it has access to AT&T's full array of broadband services and applications. They include AT&T's Cellular Video, a streaming video service with content partners like NBC and ESPN, and AT&T Mobile Music. The Propel is also compatible with AT&T Video Share, which lets you stream live one-way video to another Video Share-compatible phone.

One of the Propel's features is access to AT&T Mobile Music, which is a big umbrella of features that include the built-in music player, the capability to stream and download music from Napster and eMusic, access to MusicID (a song identification service), XM radio, and streaming music videos. If you wish, you can also upload songs directly to the built-in music player via USB. The player supports MP3, MIDI, MMF, WAV, SMAF, and AAC+ file formats. The interface itself is fairly generic, with the expected functions like play, pause, and skip tracks. Other music player options include a preset equalizer, repeat and shuffle modes, and the capability to create and edit playlists. The Propel comes with 50MB of shared memory between the camera and the music player, but there's a microSD card slot if you want additional storage.

The Samsung Propel has pretty good photo quality.

The Propel comes with a 1.3-megapixel camera. It can take pictures in three resolutions (1,280x960, 640x480, 320x240), five white-balance settings, four color effects, and three quality settings. Other camera settings include 3x zoom, brightness, a self-timer, three shutter sounds with a silent option, six shot modes (single shot, multishot, mosaic shot, frame shot, and panorama), and a night mode. Photo quality was pretty good. Images looked sharp and bright. However, colors looked muted. There's also a built-in camcorder that can record in two resolutions--short video for MMS, and longer ones for whatever amount of storage is available. The only available resolution is 176x144. Other camcorder settings are the same as the still camera.

You can customize the Samsung Propel with a variety of graphics and sounds to suit your taste. If you want more, you can download them via AT&T's Media Mall store. The Propel comes with games and applications like Mobile Banking, MobiTV, the Weather Channel, WikiMobile, Guitar Hero III, JewelQuest 2, Midnight Bowling 2, and Tetris. Performance
We tested the quad-band GSM and dual-band UMTS/HSDPA Samsung Propel with AT&T in San Francisco. We were impressed with the call quality. Although we could hear the occasional static, we could still hear our callers loud and clear. We thought they sounded very natural, on both landline and cell phone calls. Callers reported the same thing--they said our voices sounded quite natural, as if we were calling from a landline. Speakerphone quality was surprisingly good--callers couldn't hear much of a difference, though we thought they sounded tinny with quite a bit of echo.

We were impressed with the HSDPA speeds on the Propel. We downloaded a song in about 50 seconds, and streaming video had little to no buffering issues. Loading Web pages took only a few seconds, too.

The Samsung Propel has a rated battery life of 5 hours talk time and 10.4 days standby time. According to FCC radiation tests, the Matrix has a digital SAR rating of 0.968 watts per kilogram.

How to get GMAIL on the Samsung Propel a767

I was disappointed to see that the built in "mobile email" providers did not include GMAIL, which in my opinion is by far the best free email service available.

The built in accounts are for Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, AIM, AT&T Yahoo, Bellsouth, Comcast, Earthlink, Juno, MindSpring, and Netzero. All of these, but no GMAIL!?!?!?

So my mission has started to get gmail to work on this thing. Here is how to do it.

The easiest way is to download GMAIL mobile from Google. Here is the address:

Enter your number in the field and you will receive a text with a link to install the client.

Once the client is installed just set up your login and password to gmail and your ready to roll.

It is free, like most things from google. It is extremely well written (better than the built in email apps on the Propel)

I have also found a couple other programs that sort of work, but the google supplied client is by far the best so far.

Well, it looks like we finally got our selves a leak from Samsung of their upcoming replacement for Omnia PRO B7320. The B7330 has been rumored around the Web for a while now, so we know that most of specs represent a steady progress of its predecessor. And now fresh photos do the same thing with design. So far, we can say B7330 is less thick, has a slightly bigger screen, keyboard has been changed a bit but still is a QWERTY. Omnia PRO B7330 will come out in October for a price we can only guess. Specs follow.

I might have intrigued you saying about bigger screen. So it is, but not by much. Future Omnia has a 320 x 320 2.63 inch TFT display. Operating system was upgraded from Windows Mobile 6.1 to 6.5 version. Rest is pretty standard: Wi-Fi, HSDPA, Bluetooth, MicroSD expansion slot. Onboard memory you get out of stock is 320MB. Could be worse, but I'm just interested in the upper limit of its expansion. Anyway, in addition to all of that B7330 features a 3.2 megapixel camera and 1500mAh battery. Now it's your word, guys, how much of your own money would you give for it?

Razer announces MMO gaming orientated Naga mouse

News from Gamescom 2009 and indeed good news because we forever had been thinking of how many buttons can there be on a mouse? Razer is right there with a new gaming Naga mouse. Do want to have a guess how many buttons they have stuffed on it? Wrong – its 17. The thing is Naga is not covered randomly with them, on left side it has a full 12 piece numeric keyboard which is there to help with gaming so you don’t have to roam all around the actual keyboard and keep the left hand exclusively on movement controls.

Behind the new design we find a familiar 5600dpi engine with 1ms response time. Enough for MMO games really, but in addition to Naga, Razer offers Add On software which allows Naga users to create unlimited number of profiles all with unique commands and key presets. Remember the Huawei U8220? Do you like the idea to bring it to Europe as a T-Mobile Pulse? If so, you then will be pleased to hear some recently appeared details on that. First, we have a new picture of it differs from the old, especially the bottom console keys, they are now placed vertically and the overall shape is smoothed out. In addition, the color scheme is also different. Perhaps Dennis Leary and his comrades should use the Squad, a compact indoor position system that enables firefighters to know their location, as well as the location of their partners. This concept gadget, designed by a University of New South Wales student Roy Hareguina, uses a sonar sensor to provide a map of the surrounding area, instead of a GPS.

Sonar might not be the ideal tool for this type of work, but firefighters cannot depend on blueprints when ceilings have caved in or when weak floors give out. Sometimes all a fireman needs to know is the location of someone who needs rescuing, and let the axe do the rest.

The Squad units are set up to “take the heat”, having a melting point of 662° Fahrenheit (343°C). It is made of polyetheretheretone (PEEK) with a tough aluminum and zinc frame, and coated with fluorosilicone for impact protection and waterproofing. You may notice that buttons are large, but this is because it is meant to be used by firemen wearing thick gloves.

So far, the Squad is only a concept, but I could easily see firemen of the future wearing one on their arm.

Most of us get SPAM every day. Some of us get more and some little. Even a newly created email account will begin to receive spam just after a few days of it’s creation. Many times we wonder where these spam come from and why? But this question remains unanswered within ourselves. So in this post I will try my best to give every possible information about the spam and will also tell you about how to combat spam.

What is SPAM?

Spam is the abuse of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately. Most widely recognized form of spam is email spam.

Where do these SPAM come from?

These spam come only from spammers and never from a legitimate user or a company. These spammers send a single email to hundreds (some times thousands or millions) of email addresses at a time. They either send it manually or use spambots to automate the process of spamming.

Why do spammers SPAM?

The main goal of spammers is to send the spam (unsolicited bulk messages) to as many people as possible in order to make profit. For example, John builds a small website to sell an ebook which gives information about weight loss. In order to make sales he needs publicity for his website. Instead of spending money on advertising, John decides to create an email which contains information about his site along with it’s link and send this email to say 100 email addresses in his contact list. If 1 person out of hundred buy this book john gets $10. What if he sends this email to 1000s of email addresses. He gets $100. Imagine, if he sends this email to 1 Million email addresses he gets $100000.

Now I hope you understood the idea behind spamming. So in order to make money, spammers send their advertising emails to as many people as possible without respecting the recipient’s privacy.

From where do SPAMmers get my email address?

On the Internet there exists many sites who collect the email IDs of people and sell them to spammers in bulk. Most often, people sign up for monthly newsletters and take up surveys. This is the time where these scam sites get their email addresses. Also many spammers collect email addresses by using spambots. These spambots collect email addresses from the Internet in order to build mailing lists. Such spambots are web crawlers that can gather email addresses from Web sites, newsgroups, forums, special-interest group (SIG) postings, and chat-room conversations.

Spammers also use the trick of creating Hoax Emails for gathering a huge list of email IDs. For example, a spammer sends a hoax email which says “Forward this Message to Help Severely Burned Child”. This email claims that 11 cents will be donated to the child’s family every time the message is sent to others. Most of the people believe this and start forwarding this hoax email to all of the IDs in their contact list. In this way the email spreads rapidly and eventually when it reaches the creator (spammer), the spammer gets a huge list of valid email addresses in the email header. When you get these kind of hoax emails, you can see for yourself in the email header which contains a huge list of email addresses of all those people to whom the email is being forwarded to. This is one of the effective methods used by spammers to gather email addresses.

Is SPAMming legal?

Spamming is completely illegal. Yet it is really difficult to stop spammers from spamming since they keep moving from one hosting company to another after getting banned. This makes it practically impossible to catch spammers and prosecute them.

How to protect my email account from getting SPAMmed?

The following methods can be used to combat email spam.

1. Use spam filters for your email account. If you’re using email services like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail etc. then spam filters are used by defaut. Each spam filter has it’s algorithm to detect spam emails and will automatically move them to SPAM folder. This keeps your inbox free from spam. However some spam emails become successful to make their way into the inbox by successfully bypassing the filters.

2. Do not post your email address in public forums, user comments and chat-rooms. Give your email address only to trustworthy websites while signing up for newsletters.

3. While taking up online surveys and filling up feedback forms, it is better not to give your personal email address. Instead singup for a dummy email account and use this for surveys and feedback forms.

4. While posting your contact email address on your website use this format: emailaddress [at] yoursite.com instead of emailaddress@yoursite.com. This protects your email address from being indexed by spambots.

5. Do not respond to hoax messages. When you receive a hoax email, avoid forwarding it to your friends. Examples of hoax messages can be found at www.hoax-slayer.com. If you really want to forward it to your friends, make sure that you use “Bcc” (blind certified copy) option to send the email. This will hide all the email IDs to which the mail is forwarded to.

Nokia Surge 6790 (AT&T)

The Nokia 6790 Surge for AT&T is a bit of a departure for the Finnish handset manufacturer. You wouldn't know it just by looking at it, but the little guy is actually a smartphone like the Nokia N and E series devices. It runs on the Symbian S60 platform and includes Exchange support, a number of productivity tools, GPS, and 3G support just like the big boys. However, the Surge isn't intended for the same audience of business and power users as the others; instead, it's geared to a younger audience, offering easy access to social networking sites and a spacious full QWERTY keyboard for easy messaging. The wallet-friendly price tag of $79.99 with a two-year contract is also quite appealing, but realize you have to sign up for a data plan with it. We're not in love with the design, but the Nokia Surge definitely fills a gap in AT&T's lineup for its younger customers who are looking for something a little more full-featured than a basic messaging cell phone for a more affordable price.

Design
When we first saw the Nokia Surge in pictures, we didn't quite know what to make of the design, and now that we have it in hand, well, it's interesting. The Surge is a lot smaller than we expected, measuring just 3.8 inches tall by 2.2 inches wide by 0.6 inch thick and 4.3 ounces. Even though the compact size is nice, we weren't so fond of the plasticky and slick feel of the phone, and the battery cover creaks at the slightest amount of pressure.

The Nokia Surge is quite compact, but we're not fond of its plasticky feel.

On front and slightly off center is Surge's 2.4-inch QVGA display. It shows 16 million colors at a 320x240-pixel resolution, and while it's clear and bright enough, it's definitely not as sharp or vibrant as some of the recent smartphones we've seen. Also, the user interface looks it belongs more on a basic cell phone than a smartphone, which has more to do with the aging Symbian operating system. The screen is also on the smaller side, so there was a bit more scrolling involved and it wasn't the best for viewing videos and Web pages. Plus, it's a magnet for fingerprints and smudges.

That said, you'll most likely be using the phone in landscape mode a lot of the time, so at least you get a wider viewing area when the screen is horizontal. To make things easier for you, the display has a built-in accelerometer, so the screen orientation will automatically switch from portrait to landscape mode when you rotate the phone. The accelerometer was fast, and the screen changed with minimal to no delay. However, we did notice that some of the onscreen icons looked jagged as if the screen was about to go on the fritz, though it never did during our testing period.

Surrounding the display is a handful of navigation controls and shortcuts. Below the display (when the phone is held vertically), you have the standard soft keys, Talk and End buttons, and a four-way directional keypad with a center select button, and to the left, there are shortcut buttons to the browser, main menu page, and messages. Though they're handy for navigating the phone, we have to say the buttons are stiff to press, and the phone creaks when trying to punch them. Another annoyance is that you have to slide open the phone to dial any numbers not in your address book.

The one bright spot about the Surge's design is the spacious full QWERTY keyboard.

While we aren't huge fans of the above controls, we were quite happy with the full QWERTY keyboard. You can get to it by pushing the screen to the right, and the sliding mechanism is smooth and securely locks into place. The keyboard buttons are nice and large and don't feel too squishy or flat, so the typing experience is great.

On top of the device, you'll find the speaker, a 2.5mm headset jack, and the power connector, which is protected by an attached cover. The microUSB port on the left side also has a protective cap, which we appreciate, but they're both difficult to remove and get in the way when trying to connect the respective cables. There's a volume rocker and camera activation/capture key on the right. Finally, the camera is located on the back, while the microSD expansion slot can be found behind the battery cover.

Quick fix #1: Go to the Windows Update site to download the latest patches for your version. To configure Windows XP to automatically download and install updates, right-click My computer, select Properties, Automatic Updates, and click Automatic (recommended). In Windows 2000 and Windows Me, open Control Panel, double-click Automatic updates, make sure "Keep my computer up to date" is checked, and Settings. For Windows 98, go to the Windows Update site and download the Critical Update Notification utility.

UK survey says off-shoring in full swing

A survey performed by The IT Job Board, an IT recruiment service based in the UK, had some grim news for native IT workers.

According to the survey, two-thirds of companies have off-shored some IT functions in the last six months. That’s on top of 34% of IT professionals who stated that more than half of their IT department had already been off-shored. Of those, 79% said the jobs were outsourced to India.

The next six months doesn’t look so rosy either. 50% of those surveyed believe their companies were planning to off-shore over the next six months. When asked where they thought the work was going 75% believed the work would go to India. As far as the roles being affected by outsourcing 79% thought it was software development related, 71% said it was programmer roles, and 57% believed it to be IT support jobs being impacted.

A big complaint with off-shoring is that the people hired lack business knowledge. 83% of those surveyed also believe it has a negative impact on the quality of IT. 76% also believe there is no long-term benefit to the economy as a result of off-shoring.

Microsoft Stores: This time, it’ll be different

As Microsoft hires top retail experts, critics raise red flags, claiming that the company is copying Apple’s stylish stores rather than out-innovating the Mac maker. The Redmond-based software giant, however, remains adamant that the experience alone will sell well enough to cover the high costs of running a large-scale retail operation, including leasing heavy-traffic locations at a premium.

Microsoft has clearly embarked on an expensive adventure with no fast return on investment. That doesn’t matter as the company’s retail vision is a long-term one.

The company’s latest high-profile hire includes George W. Blakenship, 56, retail expert credited for securing prime locations for Apple’s stylish retail stores, TechFlash learned. Microsoft is also seeking retail talent on its website, like a store manager.

Microsoft has shared little detail about its retail efforts thus far beyond officially confirming the fact that some stores will open “right next door to Apple stores,” indicating high-traffic locations across the nation’s biggest cities. When Microsoft went public with the retail strategy this January, the company said the first stores would open this fall.

According to the TechFlash report citing a Microsoft representative, Blakenship is already helping Microsoft pick prime locations. The executive provides an assistance as a consultant rather than working in a full-time capacity. Blakenship’s input will be critical due to his astounding track record.

Blakenship worked as Gap’s VP of real estate strategy before joining Apple as VP of real estate in 2000. During his Apple tenure, he helped senior VP of retail Ron Johnson define the retail strategy. In addition, Blakenship was instrumental in securing high-traffic locations for Apple’s brick-and-mortar stores. In 2002, he became senior advisor with Vectiv Corporation, a company that provides store lifecycle management enterprise software.

Prime locations are key in retail. Picking one is only half of the story, though. Negotiating terms with property owners, cutting deals, and managing paperwork - in short, making things happen - is where Blakenship excels. Here’s how his former chief Ron Johnson described to a group of investors in 2006 what prime locations meant for Apple’s retail strategy:

“If you want to enrich their lives, you can’t be in a parking lot, off a highway. You gotta be where they live their life. You gotta be right where they work, where they play, where they live, where they shop. The only way to enrich their life is to be part of their life. They’ve got to walk 10 feet to your store, not drive the car 10 miles. That’s what enriching lives would take.”

The ifoAppleStore warned that Microsoft’s new consultant has brought with him Apple’s secret retail recipe:

“Blankenship was among the earliest of Apple’s retail store employees, arriving shortly after Johnson (senior VP of Apple’s retail business). He was there when Johnson began to clarify his vision of how the stores would operate and what they would look like, and where they should be located.”

Should Microsoft build stores in times of recession?

Many think Microsoft shouldn’t have engaged in retail during this tough economic climate, especially knowing that Dell and Gateway escaped their respective retail adventures. On the other hand, Microsoft should invest now that the real estate is under pressure amid a grim macroeconomic environment, which brings the prices down.

It’s unclear if Microsoft can justify running a large-scale retail operation on selling the experience alone. Critics warn that Apple stores leverage the experience to lure people into buying premium-priced products. Although the recession is knocking on Apple’s door, too, its retail stores are still generating huge foot traffic and money.

Apple plans to open 25 new stores in fiscal 2009, half of which will be outside the U.S. Apple stores generated $1.471 billion in revenues from Mac sales in the second quarter. Over 50 percent of customers who visit Apple stores have never owned a Mac before. Although this is a 15 percent decrease in both revenue and units from the year-ago quarter, the number of visitors ballooned to 39.1 million, up from 33.7 million visitors a year ago.

With an average revenue per store $5.9 million, down from $7.1 million a year earlier, and a retail margin at $308 million, Apple stores make enough money to cover the premium attached to high-traffic locations.

Microsoft stores should focus on products

Our own John Brownlee is convinced that Microsoft’s decision to open stores next to Apple’s can’t go over particularly well. “It’s being something like opening a Walmart next to a Neiman Marcus,” he said. A prototype store image leaked from Microsoft Retail Experience Center, a 20,000 square foot private retail center at Redmond, suggests the company will focus on showing what PCs can do, promoting high-profile software like Windows 7, and helping people troubleshoot their PCs.

But Microsoft has plenty of other products to offer, both own and OEM’s: Windows Mobile smartphones, Zunes, Xbox 360s, loads of games and third-party peripherals, keyboards, mice, home media servers, media center peripherals, web cams, headsets, etc. Each of these could have a thematic appearance rather than being an array of mismatched items.

Microsoft will allegedly leverage stores to advertise key brands, like the Zune and Xbox 360. We don’t know, however, if the company will actually sell these products or send customers to OEMs in order to avoid taking away from its other retail channels. One thing is certain: People won’t walk into a Microsoft store to grab a copy of Windows or Office.

Microsoft had a retail store before Apple

Microsoft opened its own store before Apple, in 1999, but it closed down after two and a half years.

You could be forgiven for thinking that Microsoft is wrong focusing on a controllable street presence whereas it could be selling a full range of own and OEM’s products.

You could be also forgiven for thinking that Microsoft is copying Apple’s stylish stores but watchful readers will disagree, warning that Microsoft had its own store before the Mac maker opened the first Apple store.

In 1999, the 8,500 square foot microsoftSF store opened for business at the Metreon in San Francisco. The store’s interior used art installations to create a computer boutique atmosphere.

It sold mostly boxed software and merchandise, but there was also a showcase room that demoed Microsoft’s WebTV platform. Microsoft closed down the store two and a half years later.This time, things should be different.

This time, it’ll be different

In addition to Blakenship, other high-profile hires indicate that Microsoft is re-entering the retail business on a much broader and longer-term scale. An earlier appointment of David Porter as corporate vice president of retail stores certainly indicates seriousness on Microsoft’s part.

Porter had been building WalMart’s retail businesses for 25 years prior to joining DreamWorks Animation SKG as head of worldwide product distribution. With seasoned veterans like Porter and Blakenship, Microsoft’s stores should be stylish and shiny, likely staying with us for a long, long time. Let’s just hope they don’t do a brown store.

These calls can be free, as long as you’re prepared to accept some limitations. For more flexibility, you can sign up with a VoIP provider that offer low-cost monthly call plans.

Free international calls
Typically ‘PC to PC’ enables you to make free international calls. To enjoy free international calls, you, and the person you’re calling, both need the following.

1. a computer or laptop
2. a broadband connection
3. a headset/ microphone/ speaker (these may be integral to your computer)
4. an account with a VoIP provider that allows this type of calls, such as Skype or MSN.

This system suits many people. But it does have its drawbacks:

• you are tied to your computer, as is the person you’re calling;
• you need to make sure that you’ve both signed up to compatible providers that will allow you to talk to each other (usually, this has to be the same provider, though is starting to change);

Cheap international calls
You may, though, decide that you want the flexibility of making calls using a traditional home telephone instead of through your PC with headsets. If so, you could consider signing up with a VoIP provider that allows this.

With this method, you sign up to a paid call plan with a VoIP provider. The VoIP provider will send you an adaptor that allows you to plug the base of your normal handset into your computer or router. This uses VoIP technology to make ‘phone-to-phone’ calls. The only difference is that the calls go through your existing broadband connection - and not through a landline.

It means that you can simply pick up the phone and dial a number, as before. The person you’re calling doesn’t need to have a computer, or broadband. The call quality is so good that the person you’re calling won’t know you’re using VoIP.

How much you pay depends on the call plan you choose. You can choose one that includes just a few European countries, for example, or the US and Canada, or one that covers many more countries around the world. Whatever you go for, the monthly cost will be capped. As long as you call only the countries listed in your call plan, you’ll pay exactly the same subscription, each and every month, for unlimited, anytime calls. No unpleasant bills!

But the problem is that flash of light can result in red eye, closed eyes, and if you ever watch the film stars walking down the red carpet at their latest premier; thousands of flashes of light isn’t the most pleasant thing to watch in the world.

This new flash Rob Fergus and Dilip Krishnan are developing gets around those problems by being invisible. In other words, it does not use visible light. Instead they use infrared and ultraviolet light as the “dark flash” and modified the camera using it to recognize those frequencies.

Taking a picture in this way does not produce a perfect image, though, as the result is the equivalent of what you’d expect to see through night vision goggles. To rectify that the camera also takes a second capture of the scene being photographed without the aid of the flash. Those two pictures are then combined using software to produce the final image.

The use of software to combine the images also allows the images to be improved, for example, unwanted reflections can be automatically taken out. The combining of the images is not perfect, however, and the image capture can miss fine detail like freckles.

Facebook celebrates 250 millionth user

You probably had a good idea that Facebook was popular, but I’m sure many users didn’t know just how popular the social website was. According to the most recent Facebook Blog post by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook now connects 250 million people. To celebrate this fact Facebook has developed some cool animation to show just how connected Facebook is globally.

Besides being a place where 250 million people can now connect it’s clear from Facebook’s animation that the website has become a global community. It’s hard to imagine that Facebook first started as a spinoff of a Harvard University social website called Facemash.

I have personally been amazed by some of the friends I have been able to find on Facebook. Some people I haven’t been able to track down in a decade. Some how Facebook just makes it easy to connect with long lost friends and family. That’s part of the reason why the company now has 250 million users.

Atlona Technologies brings wireless HDMI/DVI/VGA through WUSB

Back in mid-April, a little noticed product from San Jose-based Atlona Technologies hit the streets with a MSRP of $199, dubbed HDAiR. Yesterday, they released the follow-on to that product. It comes with the same price, but increases the usable resolution to 1440×1200 (up from the previous 1440×1050). It also supports native 720p.

It’s called AT-HDAiR, and it’s a wireless USB to HDMI or VGA adapter, that also supports DVI through an adapter. The WUSB chipset was developed by Wisair. Future products supporting larger display surfaces and more features are also planned.

The system works in two parts: The host and the monitor receiver. The host can theoretically be any device, though currently there are only drivers written for Windows XP and Vista. A WUSB adapter connects to a standard USB 2.0 port. It acts as the transmitter. A receiver is connected to the monitor, which supports up to 1440×1200 or 720p.

Using Wireless USB, the host can then be positioned up to 30 feet from the monitor, allowing for easy same-room access to project a signal to the HDTV while working also on the notebook computer in some other way, for example.

Review: Battlefield 1943 for Xbox 360

The long-running Battlefield series is back with Battlefield 1943, a download-only game on the Xbox 360 (tested), PS3, and PC. It takes players to the Pacific theater of World War II where it puts the US Marine Corps up against the Japanese Imperial Army. It’s a formula we all know well–the World War II FPS–but now we see a few interesting new maps and guaranteed action thanks to a huge release on the Xbox 360.

In fact, the release was the game’s first problem. Its servers were totally overwhelmed from the start on the Xbox 360 and players could barely get in the game for the first 24 hours or so. It was a very frustrating experience because you would try to get in a game over and over and if you finally got in you could play for a few minutes and then you would get kicked… except being kicked caused my Xbox to freeze which was more than a bit annoying. Before long servers were added and the game seemed totally stable.

BF1943 starts off with three maps (Iwo Jima, Wake Island, and Guadalcanal) with a fourth (Coral Sea) added when a particular system’s players hit 43 million total kills (this happened July 15th on Xbox 360). Coral Sea is dogfight only, so it will be a unique aspect of the game, but not a giant addition of content, unless if you can’t get enough of the planes/anti-aircraft guns.

From the start Battlefield 1943 seems sparse compared to much of the competition. You only have three classes to choose from (assault, rifleman, and sniper… basically close, medium, and far range specialists) and each person has a single explosive choice, melee, and secondary weapon. You can’t get new weapons with more experience points, in fact there seems to be no particular benefit from amassing experience aside from in-game achievement stamps and personal pride. What Battlefield does offer are vehicles and awesome gun placements. In 1943 you get a plane, tank, landing boat, jeep, anti-aircraft flak canon, and machine gun turret. The vehicles (more so than the gun placements) are the game big draw as they add a great element to combat and they allow for team action, as you can pile three guys in a jeep, two in a tank, and so on. Of course, the planes are extremely fun to use, and can be very deadly if you are good enough to use them properly, but most people can’t.

It’s hard to generalize about games with as many total players as Battlefield 1943, especially when I’m focusing only on the Xbox, but overall the combat is fast and furious but easy to follow. There are a maximum of 24 players per map, enemies and friends are clearly defined thanks to colored flags over their heads and there is no team-killing so you don’t have much to worry about while you are firing away.

Teamwork is a must because each map has five flags that have to be controlled to be successful, but a problem arises in that there aren’t any mechanics aside from the vehicles that promote teamwork. Maybe you’ll run with a group of guys to make an attack, but without anyone chatting there is little organization and the lack of cohesive groups of enemies means that often a single good player is all that is needed to take over a base. This is probably a result of the fact that the maps are large, there are multiple choose-able spawn points, and at any time more than a few players are either flying planes or hanging out waiting for a plane to spawn. So with 24 players in-game you might only have 16 fighting and those are spread out all over the maps. The result of this is you might march into a key base and see no defenders there, or just one guy that you can sneak up on. Strategically speaking, it’s disappointing.

Another shortcoming of the game is the weapon firing. The weapon models look good enough, and their firing action feels right, but the result of that firing is far from perfect. I ended up often just firing as much as possible at an enemy hoping they would die, not shooting them with a great shot and knowing that I got them or even expecting a certain reaction. I’m probably used to Call of Duty 4 which, in my opinion, nailed this aspect of the game, so BF1943 firing seems like a crapshoot compared to what I would expect from a multi-player FPS in 2009. It’s different, not completely bad, but it just never felt totally right to me. The machine gun was probably the best feeling main gun and the rifle action felt completely disconnected, turning what could be the game’s most versatile weapon into something not particularly fun to use.

The Battlefield formula tries to ensure that all these shortcomings are made up by the addition of vehicles (at least as much as that is possible). This didn’t work out exactly as well as it could have, but the vehicles are all very well done, and what’s more, they are balanced. The size of the maps makes them important simply for transportation purposes–this is where the jeep comes in handy–but they have other advantages as well. A critical advantage is firepower as the jeep has a machine gun operated by a passenger and the tank has its shells, as well as a driver-controlled machine gun and a passenger-controlled one. Vehicles are also great for making sure two or more teammates arrive at a location at the same time. While the plane, unless controlled by an expert, is only a minor annoyance most of the time, the tank is a different story. It is heavily armored, rather versatile, and has different attack options, making it the best spearhead for attacks. It is vulnerable to the assault players’ bazooka as well as rifle-propelled grenades, but it generally takes 2-3 hits to destroy a tank, by which time the attacker has usually been vanquished. So the tank is a bit on the powerful side, if it was a little slower or the shells took longer to refill it could be a bit more balanced, but overall when a single soldier has to go up against a tank, the tank usually wins.

While playing the game you will accumulate points for kills, kill assists, captures, and destroying vehicles (you lose points for suicides). Points won’t earn you any weapons but you will get post-match bragging rights and you’ll move up the ranks over time. The game has Microsoft’s standard 200 Xbox Live Achievement points, as well as in-game achievements which tend to be more difficult to acquire. These systems feel tacked on and while they are better than nothing, they left me wishing for more.

Considering the $15 price tag it’s hard to deny that Battlefield 1943 is a good game on a number of different levels. It delivers a balanced WWII FPS with polished sound and first class visuals, plus it allows for the command of vehicles that are more than just a distraction–they are a major part of the game. Those features noted, the game lacks the depth that I’ve come to look for in a multi-player FPS. The weapon options are limited, there is little teamwork amongst the players (at least so far), and, most significantly, there are only four maps. Realistically there are only three because Coral Sea is separate from the main play mode and looks like it will just end up being a sandbox/deathmatch for people who don’t feel like waiting for a plane on the main maps.

We have to make allowances for Battlefield 1943 because it is $15 and downloadable, so with these in mind the game is quite impressive. Casting these aside, the game is no COD4, World at War, or Team Fortress 2, but it’s not trying to be. The Battlefield series has its own fans and its own strengths, and if you can appreciate the game for what it is you should be able to get more than a few hours of fun out of it.

IFPI wants money from The Pirate Bay sale

The music industry will attempt to seize money paid to acquire the Pirate Bay, according to a high-level music industry source and a spokesman for the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the trade group representing the music industry worldwide.

Global Gaming Factory, a Swedish software company, made big news two weeks ago by announcing that it would acquire the Pirate Bay, the popular outlaw file-sharing site, for $7.8 million. Since then the company has been touting a new business model and even hiring executives, such as Wayne Rosso, the former Grokster president, to legally obtain content from film and music industries.

What remains to be seen is how that sale might be affected by attempts by the music industry to collect the $3.6 million damages that a court in Sweden awarded it in April. The court found the four operators of the Pirate Bay--Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi, and Carl Lundström--guilty of copyright violations and sentenced each to a year in jail. The court also ordered them to pay 30 million Swedish kronor ($3.6 million).

Alex Jacob, a spokesman for the IFPI, said that the group has always intended to collect the damages award, but now, should the sale go through, music execs know that the original Pirate Bay operators have access to the money.

Whether these attempts to seize part of the proceeds could hold up a sale remain unclear. The first thing to remember is that the sale isn't yet done.

According to a press release, Global Gaming's offer is to pay half of the $7.8 million in cash and the other half in the company's stock. To finance the deal, Global Gaming must issue new shares and to do that it needs the blessing of investors and board of directors. Any acquisition isn't expected to be finalized before August, the company said.

On the other side, the Pirate Bay's founders have said that they haven't owned the company for years.

"We never had any interest in earning money from the Pirate Bay," Peter Sunde told Dagens Nyheter, a Swedish newspaper. "We haven't owned TPB since the search and seizure in 2006... Those who will get the money, friends in a foreign company, have agreed as a condition to put the money in a foundation for future internet projects."

The legal adviser for Global Gaming has said that the Pirate Bay is owned by a company in the Seychelles called Reservella.

Jacob, from the IFPI, says it makes no difference who owns the Pirate Bay. He said: "The judge found the four operators guilty and ordered them to pay the damages."

That's who the IFPI will try to get the money from.

Review: Word Tower for iPhone

If you’re a fan of Boggle, Scrabble, and other word-type games, you’ll love the latest twist on the traditional model that Word Tower delivers.

Word Tower is a game that presents itself like Tetris except that instead of falling blocks you have falling letters. Your goal is to combine the falling letters with the letters already on the game board and create words. Depending on the level you choose, the words can be three letters long or a minimum of four or more. The object is to finish the level before the letters stack in towers, hence the name Word Tower.

Gameplay is done by interacting with the game board and dragging the falling letters to their destination and then matching letters that are adjacent to each other to form words.

I’ve been playing the game for about a day now on and off and it does take some getting used to. Initially I started in Starter mode but found it to be a little too slow. I then went to Advanced and found it to be much more to my liking. Granted, in Advanced mode the letters fall fast, so you have to be on your toes or your game will be over before you know it.

The developer, Mac Martine, definitely did a great job at keeping the game player engaged. As I mentioned above, it starts off pretty easy but as you go on there are different tiles that fall like a star, snowflake, ice, and more that will do things like triple word points, interfere with word selection, blow up random tiles, and more. Also, as you progress the goal won’t be to eliminate 50 lettered tiles, like it is on the first level, but will instead be to match the key with the keyhole. The game also offers the ability to flip the gameboard over, which allows the letters to fall in the opposite direction, opening up new word creation possibilities.

Mozilla starts Contributions pilot for Firefox Add-on developers

The developers behind some of the more popular add-ons created for the Firefox browser are the unsung heroes of Mozilla’s browser success. The Firefox browser on its own is a great piece of software, but it is made all the more usable by the large array of add-ons available to enhance it.

Mozilla has decided its about time those developers were able to easily get some recognition for their efforts in the form of cold, hard cash. To that end, a new pilot has been launched this week called Contributions which allows add-on developers to easily receive a donation (contribution) from Firefox users as a way of saying thankyou or for funding continued development.

The Contributions system is voluntary. Developers can set it up for their add-ons, but its up to users if they decide to contribute or not. The transfer of money will be handled through PayPal who Mozilla is currently setting up the payment system with. The other good news is Mozilla aren’t taking a cut and the developer will receive all funds minus the PayPal transaction fee.

Along with the Contributions pilot Mozilla has also introduced “About the Developer” areas which sound like they will act just like a mini-blog. The developer can give details about the add-ons they develop, themselves, and what the future holds.

Comcast launches free iPhone application

With ever increasing competition from other cable operators and telecommunication companies such as AT&T and Verizon it’s probably not surprising that Comcast has decided to offer their own iPhone mobile application. Considering wireless companies such as AT&T and Verizon are touting the remote capabilites of their many household services it seems that Comcast wants to do the same. The free mobile application takes some of the best features of Comcast Digital Voice, Digital Cable, and High-Speed Internet, and makes them available through an iPhone or iPod touch.

The application features something called a SmartZone unified box. Using SmartZone you can access email and voice mail in one location. Users can sort and search their email and even forward voice mail to others using email. Another feature of SmartZone is its integration with the Comcast Visual Voicemail service.

Some Digital Voice features of the application include the ability to look at home phone logs, forward home phone calls to your iPhone or any other number, listen to voice mail and easily call someone back with a tap, and the ability to quickly add phone numbers to the application’s Universal Address Book.

Comcast was naturally smart enough to include some video components with the application. Users can browse their video guide and mark favorite channels and programs through their iPhone. You can also set reminders for favorite shows and even share favorite shows and showtimes with friends. Believe it or not, the application even includes information on Comcast’s On Demand service. Through the iPhone application users will be able to explore the Comcast On Demand content library and pick a favorite category and even watch trailers for available movies.

Google goes mobile with style, putting forth a new app for Android and BlackBerry devices that lets you do things carriers hate: Transcribe voicemail in a karaoke style, make cheap international calls, and send and receive free SMS messages - all without even using your cellphone number. Is Google beating carriers at their own game?

Google’s young service dubbed Google Voice could significantly alter the mobile landscape down the road. Basically a clever telephony service that routes your calls while providing the universal voice mailbox, Google Voice gives you one phone number to rule them all, linking all your cellphones and fixed lines together. This way, your contacts call only your Google number while you decide where incoming calls route on a per contact basis or using a broader criteria based on a region, phone numbers, groups of people, and other custom rules set in the web interface.

The service links all your cellphones and landlines to one Google number.

Advanced features allow you to record calls, make free conference calls, and switch phones during a call. The universal voicemail mailbox feature turns each audio message into a piece of text. The service came to light in June as an invite-only limited beta, adding new features like the ability to change your Google Voice number. It’s still in beta (request an invite) and available only in the US, but Google promised to eventually roll it out internationally.

With a native mobile client for Android and BlackBerry devices unveiled Wednesday, Google Voice went mobile, and in a big way too. The app puts the service right where you need it - on your cellphone - allowing you to use your Google Voice number to place outgoing calls and text people. The app is intuitively integrated with a default address book and dialer programs built-in to your phone.

SMS messages sent and received through your Google Voice number are totally free and international calls are way cheaper than your carrier’s minutes. The app transcribes your voicemail in a “karaoke style,” highlighting the words being read. Here’s how Vincent Paquet and Marcus Foster of Google Voice and Mobile teams, respectively, described the app in a blog post:

Previously, to place a call using Google Voice, you had to dial your own Google Voice number from your cell phone or use the Quick Call button online. With this new mobile app, you can make calls and send SMS messages with your Google Voice number directly from your mobile phone. The app is fully integrated with each phone’s contacts, so you can call via Google Voice straight from your address book.

Google Voice on Android: Automatically transcribed voicemail messages.

You can also access a combined call history and read SMS messages sent to your Google Voice number, even if your phone doesn’t receive SMS messages. The app integrates with Android’s native dialer, unlike the BlackBerry version that comes with a separate dialer app.

Best of all, outgoing calls and SMS messages display your Google Voice number, rather than your underlying cellphone number. Previously, people retrieving your return calls would have seen your cell, home, or office number, depending on where you received incoming calls.

Google told the NYTimes that it’s “working with Apple” on an iPhone version. Wired noted that the iPhone maker and AT&T could seriously cripple the app so it doesn’t lure users away from the carrier’s pricey minutes and text messages (AT&T’s unlimited texting option costs $20 a month).

Apple’s App Store agreement with the AT&T already prohibits VoIP and video calls, giving the carrier the power to prevent apps like Skype and Slingbox from placing VoIP calls or transferring video over its cellular network, although AT&T does allow limited video streaming in some apps.

Until Google Voice app for the iPhone becomes a reality, iPhone users can either play with GV Mobile, an unofficial Google Voice app, or access the web-based Google Voice interface using the Safari browser. Android users can download the app by searching for “Google Voice” in the Android Market. BlackBerry owners are advised to visit m.google.com/voice. People who don’t own an Android or a BlackBerry device can still operate Google Voice from the mobile Google Voice site at http://www.google.com/voice.

Resident Evil 5 PC dated and extras detailed

Capcom has finally announced that Resident Evil 5 will be released on PC in September. Those of you in North America will get it on September 15th while Europe will have to wait a few more days until September 18th.

The game will have been out for a number of months on PS3 and Xbox 360 by the time the PC version arrives. So Capcom has included some additional features to tempt you to either buy it again, or give PC players some ammunition when arguing why it was worth the wait.

First up, the game will be playable in 3D if you have the right setup to play with the Nvidia 3D Vision Kit (Nvidia goggles, 120Hz display, compatible GeForce graphics card, Windows 7 or Vista). Work has been done on the game to give it depth and make objects leap out of the screen at you if you choose to play in this mode.

Alongside offering additional costumes for both Chris and Sheva, and online matchmaking, those of you with a powerful rig are going to be most interested with the updated Mercenaries mode. Mercenaries is a mini-game which sets you a challenge that is usually done under pressure e.g. timed. Capcom are claiming the PC version of this mode can cope with three-times the enemies seen on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Convergence brings a mobile phone that can light your cigarette

Engadget has uncovered what is definitely one of the strangest combo mobile phones I’ve seen in a while. The SB6309 Lighter Phone doesn’t really leave anything to the imagination given its name, but its execution is another story. Apparently you slide back a protective cover and then insert your cigarette. Seconds later you’re puffing away.

As of this writing there’s no word on if the Lighter Phone is real, what its price is, or anything else, but the concept alone should get people thinking more about what they really want their mobile phone to be able to do for them in the future.

I’ve heard of smoking mobile phones but this is ridiculous–ok, I couldn’t resist that one.

Confirmation that the next iPod Nano will sport a camera?

For the last couple of months there have been many photos and stories floating around about what the next iPod Nano (5G) would offer. The running theme seems to support the inclusion of a camera and a release date of September. We can’t speak to the release date but if the photos at accessory store Uxsight.com are to be believed, a camera is definitely coming soon.

Affectionately called the iPod Nano 5th Generation 5G Skin Case, it features a cut out on the back of the case for a camera.

My guess is that it’s just a manufacturer trying to get ready for a release. The interesting part is that it’s actually for sale, so maybe they do know a little something.

June 2009 Console Game Sales: Summer slump

Gamers, we’ve officially entered the summer slump. That time when there’s no hugely hyped release coming until October or so. It’s also the time when many gamers finish playing catch-up from the previous holiday season. This editor, for one, is still working his way through Dead Space (and regretting having waited this long to start).

Looking at the numbers, it’s a slump for game retailers as well. June 2009 sales were down 31 percent from 2008–a start contrast that many observers will be quick to associate with continuing economic hard times. Retail research firm NPD, in its report for June, stated that the drop is the biggest since September 2000.

“The impact of the economy is clearly reflected in the sales numbers,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier in a statement following the release of the numbers. She added that at this point, consumers are waiting for a must-have title - or a hardware price cut.

Amazingly, Nintendo’s Wii Play finally fell out of the top 10, after over 3 years on the charts. Most have ascribed that dynastic run on the charts to the inclusion of an extra Wii Remote in a package costing only $10 more than a standalone remote, though it’s possible that Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 might be the replacement with its packed-in Wii MotionPlus accessory.

When you have opened the 'My Computer' or Windows Explorer the DVD/CD drive has got disappeared!. when you peeped into the 'Device Manager' it is seen that there is some serious problem and the entries have been marked with the yellow exclamation mark. When selecting the 'Properties from the context menu of the particular drive and error code is reported saying "Error code 19". Here is the solution to get the DVD or CD drive back.

Just editing the Windows registry a little bit will solve this problem.
Press [Win] + [R] (or select Run from start menu)and type 'regedit'.
Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

In the right pane delete the "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" values. Just select it and press [Delete] key and confirm. Now restart your system you will get your DVD/CD drive back in My computer
