Emergency flashlight to be a kinetic charge torch

You never know when real emergency situation can arise. Whenever you may need an emergency gadget you might find your device gone flat so that will not fit the bill. But industrial designer Jon Thai came up with a concept that makes the difference. Dubbed the Emergency flashlight, this helpful gadget operates without batteries while ensuring continuous operation.

This smart flash light can be easily charged while shaking. This is possible thanks to a coil, a magnet and a capacitor fixed inside the flash light so once the flash light is well shaken, the magnet will move through the coil to produce power intended to be stored in the capacitor. So as you start using the flash light in those emergency situations, the accumulated power in the capacitor will be used.

The Emergency flash light can be lit for around 30 minutes before it requires another shaking charge. No more bulbs changing as this clever flash light requires no batteries and offer bright white LED light. Taking into consideration that this is an emergency gadget, you will be able to store the energy until there is an emergency situation.

This kinetic charge flash light seems to be an ideal gadget in many situations and compared to conventional batteries that may drain any minute, you may feel free using the flash light that appears to be environmentally friendly gizmo. So why not live a secure life while keeping environment clean.

CitySailer two-wheeler to cruise on public roads

Have you ever imagined sailing on public roads? Christened the CitySailer, this splendiferous two-wheeler seems to push the envelope. This out of this world vehicle is powered by fuel cells while still offering a safe city driving even if you do not like wearing helmets. This artfully designed vehicle features a sail like windshield that is able to power the scooter using wind power. So why not start using green transportation that is so much beneficial to our environment.

This ecologically friendly wonder seems to live up to expectations for those who are tired of constant traffic jams as the design of the CitySailer is quite slender that take maneuverability to the next level. Engineered by industrial designer Christopher Kuh, this outstanding vehicle uses the combination of highly productive fuel cells and drive-by-wire technology.

The CitySailer two-wheeler runs on an electric engine positioned inside the rear wheel. In order to park this sustainable scooter, there are some special steering levers the driver will need to pull. Additionally, the driver’s safety is ensured by seat belt and airbags that makes it possible to drive without need of helmet. Optionally, the driver will be able to use a large backpack mounted into the vehicle to provide some storing capacity.

Razer announces MMO gaming orientated Naga mouse

News from Gamescom 2009 and indeed good news because we forever had been thinking of how many buttons can there be on a mouse? Razer is right there with a new gaming Naga mouse. Do want to have a guess how many buttons they have stuffed on it? Wrong – its 17. The thing is Naga is not covered randomly with them, on left side it has a full 12 piece numeric keyboard which is there to help with gaming so you don’t have to roam all around the actual keyboard and keep the left hand exclusively on movement controls.

Behind the new design we find a familiar 5600dpi engine with 1ms response time. Enough for MMO games really, but in addition to Naga, Razer offers Add On software which allows Naga users to create unlimited number of profiles all with unique commands and key presets. And, finally, to sum up gaming enthusiasm, Razer also offers a Megasoma gaming mouse mat. This will suit optical and laser units for 49.99 USD. Razer Naga for size runs up to 79.99 USD. Well, who said MMO gaming is cheap?

Squad Positioning System for Firefighters

I just saw an episode of Rescue Me last week where one of the firefighters was trapped, and the rest of the dysfunctional characters didn’t know where he was. Just watch the show on Hulu if you don’t know what I’m talking about.

Perhaps Dennis Leary and his comrades should use the Squad, a compact indoor position system that enables firefighters to know their location, as well as the location of their partners. This concept gadget, designed by a University of New South Wales student Roy Hareguina, uses a sonar sensor to provide a map of the surrounding area, instead of a GPS.

Sonar might not be the ideal tool for this type of work, but firefighters cannot depend on blueprints when ceilings have caved in or when weak floors give out. Sometimes all a fireman needs to know is the location of someone who needs rescuing, and let the axe do the rest.

The Squad units are set up to “take the heat”, having a melting point of 662° Fahrenheit (343°C). It is made of polyetheretheretone (PEEK) with a tough aluminum and zinc frame, and coated with fluorosilicone for impact protection and waterproofing. You may notice that buttons are large, but this is because it is meant to be used by firemen wearing thick gloves.

So far, the Squad is only a concept, but I could easily see firemen of the future wearing one on their arm.

Review: Battlefield 1943 for Xbox 360

The long-running Battlefield series is back with Battlefield 1943, a download-only game on the Xbox 360 (tested), PS3, and PC. It takes players to the Pacific theater of World War II where it puts the US Marine Corps up against the Japanese Imperial Army. It’s a formula we all know well–the World War II FPS–but now we see a few interesting new maps and guaranteed action thanks to a huge release on the Xbox 360.

In fact, the release was the game’s first problem. Its servers were totally overwhelmed from the start on the Xbox 360 and players could barely get in the game for the first 24 hours or so. It was a very frustrating experience because you would try to get in a game over and over and if you finally got in you could play for a few minutes and then you would get kicked… except being kicked caused my Xbox to freeze which was more than a bit annoying. Before long servers were added and the game seemed totally stable.

coral_sea_001

BF1943 starts off with three maps (Iwo Jima, Wake Island, and Guadalcanal) with a fourth (Coral Sea) added when a particular system’s players hit 43 million total kills (this happened July 15th on Xbox 360). Coral Sea is dogfight only, so it will be a unique aspect of the game, but not a giant addition of content, unless if you can’t get enough of the planes/anti-aircraft guns.

From the start Battlefield 1943 seems sparse compared to much of the competition. You only have three classes to choose from (assault, rifleman, and sniper… basically close, medium, and far range specialists) and each person has a single explosive choice, melee, and secondary weapon. You can’t get new weapons with more experience points, in fact there seems to be no particular benefit from amassing experience aside from in-game achievement stamps and personal pride. What Battlefield does offer are vehicles and awesome gun placements. In 1943 you get a plane, tank, landing boat, jeep, anti-aircraft flak canon, and machine gun turret. The vehicles (more so than the gun placements) are the game big draw as they add a great element to combat and they allow for team action, as you can pile three guys in a jeep, two in a tank, and so on. Of course, the planes are extremely fun to use, and can be very deadly if you are good enough to use them properly, but most people can’t.

It’s hard to generalize about games with as many total players as Battlefield 1943, especially when I’m focusing only on the Xbox, but overall the combat is fast and furious but easy to follow. There are a maximum of 24 players per map, enemies and friends are clearly defined thanks to colored flags over their heads and there is no team-killing so you don’t have much to worry about while you are firing away.

bf1943_08

Teamwork is a must because each map has five flags that have to be controlled to be successful, but a problem arises in that there aren’t any mechanics aside from the vehicles that promote teamwork. Maybe you’ll run with a group of guys to make an attack, but without anyone chatting there is little organization and the lack of cohesive groups of enemies means that often a single good player is all that is needed to take over a base. This is probably a result of the fact that the maps are large, there are multiple choose-able spawn points, and at any time more than a few players are either flying planes or hanging out waiting for a plane to spawn. So with 24 players in-game you might only have 16 fighting and those are spread out all over the maps. The result of this is you might march into a key base and see no defenders there, or just one guy that you can sneak up on. Strategically speaking, it’s disappointing.

Another shortcoming of the game is the weapon firing. The weapon models look good enough, and their firing action feels right, but the result of that firing is far from perfect. I ended up often just firing as much as possible at an enemy hoping they would die, not shooting them with a great shot and knowing that I got them or even expecting a certain reaction. I’m probably used to Call of Duty 4 which, in my opinion, nailed this aspect of the game, so BF1943 firing seems like a crapshoot compared to what I would expect from a multi-player FPS in 2009. It’s different, not completely bad, but it just never felt totally right to me. The machine gun was probably the best feeling main gun and the rifle action felt completely disconnected, turning what could be the game’s most versatile weapon into something not particularly fun to use.

The Battlefield formula tries to ensure that all these shortcomings are made up by the addition of vehicles (at least as much as that is possible). This didn’t work out exactly as well as it could have, but the vehicles are all very well done, and what’s more, they are balanced. The size of the maps makes them important simply for transportation purposes–this is where the jeep comes in handy–but they have other advantages as well. A critical advantage is firepower as the jeep has a machine gun operated by a passenger and the tank has its shells, as well as a driver-controlled machine gun and a passenger-controlled one. Vehicles are also great for making sure two or more teammates arrive at a location at the same time. While the plane, unless controlled by an expert, is only a minor annoyance most of the time, the tank is a different story. It is heavily armored, rather versatile, and has different attack options, making it the best spearhead for attacks. It is vulnerable to the assault players’ bazooka as well as rifle-propelled grenades, but it generally takes 2-3 hits to destroy a tank, by which time the attacker has usually been vanquished. So the tank is a bit on the powerful side, if it was a little slower or the shells took longer to refill it could be a bit more balanced, but overall when a single soldier has to go up against a tank, the tank usually wins.

bf1943_09

While playing the game you will accumulate points for kills, kill assists, captures, and destroying vehicles (you lose points for suicides). Points won’t earn you any weapons but you will get post-match bragging rights and you’ll move up the ranks over time. The game has Microsoft’s standard 200 Xbox Live Achievement points, as well as in-game achievements which tend to be more difficult to acquire. These systems feel tacked on and while they are better than nothing, they left me wishing for more.

Considering the $15 price tag it’s hard to deny that Battlefield 1943 is a good game on a number of different levels. It delivers a balanced WWII FPS with polished sound and first class visuals, plus it allows for the command of vehicles that are more than just a distraction–they are a major part of the game. Those features noted, the game lacks the depth that I’ve come to look for in a multi-player FPS. The weapon options are limited, there is little teamwork amongst the players (at least so far), and, most significantly, there are only four maps. Realistically there are only three because Coral Sea is separate from the main play mode and looks like it will just end up being a sandbox/deathmatch for people who don’t feel like waiting for a plane on the main maps.

We have to make allowances for Battlefield 1943 because it is $15 and downloadable, so with these in mind the game is quite impressive. Casting these aside, the game is no COD4, World at War, or Team Fortress 2, but it’s not trying to be. The Battlefield series has its own fans and its own strengths, and if you can appreciate the game for what it is you should be able to get more than a few hours of fun out of it.

Resident Evil 5 PC dated and extras detailed

re5_fullCapcom has finally announced that Resident Evil 5 will be released on PC in September. Those of you in North America will get it on September 15th while Europe will have to wait a few more days until September 18th.

The game will have been out for a number of months on PS3 and Xbox 360 by the time the PC version arrives. So Capcom has included some additional features to tempt you to either buy it again, or give PC players some ammunition when arguing why it was worth the wait.

First up, the game will be playable in 3D if you have the right setup to play with the Nvidia 3D Vision Kit (Nvidia goggles, 120Hz display, compatible GeForce graphics card, Windows 7 or Vista). Work has been done on the game to give it depth and make objects leap out of the screen at you if you choose to play in this mode.

Alongside offering additional costumes for both Chris and Sheva, and online matchmaking, those of you with a powerful rig are going to be most interested with the updated Mercenaries mode. Mercenaries is a mini-game which sets you a challenge that is usually done under pressure e.g. timed. Capcom are claiming the PC version of this mode can cope with three-times the enemies seen on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Despite of its huge popularity, Kawasaki appears to be always on the go. A new gadget offered by Kawasaki is designed for a new generation GTR. These smart cameras are able to get heat for more than 300 meters which is much better than what you see through your headlights.
As you move in the dark, the system will be alerting you to those dangerous road situations. While driving without night vision does not make you look at your on board computer, this smart system highlights identified objects.

This smart system is able to alert you though a Bluetooth headpiece mounted in your helmet and provide you with additional data about the distance from the object. So if you are bike aficionado, you will be surprised at how useful it could be.

Click Here Sony X-Series Walkman (16GB)

Touch-screen MP3 players are all the rage, so it was only a matter of time before Sony hopped on the bandwagon. As it turns out, it was more time than we all anticipated. The company's X-Series Walkman was announced at CES 2009 and was expected to hit shelves in mid-June, but the player didn't go on sale until early July. The good news is that the final product is every bit as impressive as the preproduction model that CNET got to play with back in May. The X-Series Walkman offers a high-quality design with a gorgeous screen, a fun and innovative interface, and a plethora of cool features--just be prepared to pay for it accordingly. The player is priced the same as the iPod Touch, with the 16GB going for $299 and the 32GB listing for $100 more.

Design
Sony did not skimp on the construction of the X-Series Walkman, which is modeled after a geode with its glossy face and back plates wrapped in a glittering textured edge. The player is made of sturdy metal and has a weighty quality that makes it feel as expensive as the price tag insists. It's not as slim as the iPod Touch, measuring 3.8 inches by 2.1 inches by 0.4 inch, but it's still quite pocket-friendly, and the 3-inch OLED display is nothing to scoff at. Our one complaint is that the shiny surface is extremely smudge-prone and nearly impossible to keep clean given the touch screen interface.

Of course, the fingerprints are easy to ignore thanks to the fact that Sony went above and beyond with the interface, which is the best touch-screen utilization next to the iPod Touch. In fact, it's the only other touch screen we've come across that's actually fun to use. It has the "bounce back" effect when you are quickly scrolling through a long list, and a rather cool and unusual tilted scrolling effect for video and album art that's hard to explain in print--best to check out our First Look video for that. But perhaps best of all, you don't even need to use the touch screen for playback controls. The Walkman has tactile play/pause and track shuttle buttons on the top side, as well as a dedicated volume rocker on the right edge, meaning blind (in-pocket) navigation is a possibility with this player. That's truly a rarity in a touch-screen device. Another cool physical characteristic: the giant hold switch on the back.

Dragging your finger across the screen lets you tilt and scan quickly through album art and video frames.

In general, navigating the X-Series is a simple task. All of the main functions are laid out as icons on the top screen, where you are free to set any photo as wallpaper for personalization purposes. Delving into the music menu takes you to a list of songs, artists, albums, genres, or playlists, depending on where you left off. A soft key that appears at the bottom of all music screens allows you to choose between the various subnavs for music, including a folder browser option. Album art is always front and center, and you can choose to view by cover art only for a more visual experience.

Indeed, album art is the most prominent item displayed on the playback screen, which also features soft keys for playing, pausing, and skipping tracks. Or if the old-fashioned way of switching songs doesn't appeal to you, you can tap and hold on the album art and then use tilt-and-scroll to visually select another track. The playback screen also offers up track, artist, and album name; a battery meter and clock; and soft keys for pulling up a contextual menu, stepping back through menus, and connecting to the Web for song-related content (more on this later).

Even getting content onto the X-Series Walkman is an easy and enjoyable process, something that could not be said of Walkmans of years prior. Sony includes its excellent, superlight Content Transfer app. It allows for simple drag and drop of media files directly from your desktop or from within iTunes. You may also choose to use a jukebox such as Windows Media Player or Rhapsody. Although the X-Series will mount as a UMS device for use with a Mac or Linux machine, the app is made only for Windows.

Load Time Analyzer for Firefox

This is a very useful Firefox extension for web developers, designers and bloggers. We all know that speed is a key component of usability, and that the loading time of your website will make the difference between people actually navigating it or just skipping it altogether.

Load Time Analyzer is a Firefox extension created by Google that displays the number of events that are processed by a certain website and how long it takes to load them all. The load time displayed will obviously be influenced by your Internet connection, nonetheless it can provide a good indicator of the site speed.

The most interesting part of this extension are the detailed graphs that it outputs for every single site. On the graphs you will be able to see what objects are creating bottlenecks, how many external requests the site has, what plugins or scripts are placing requests and so on.

Acer Aspire Revo Nettop Review

Late last year, NVIDIA surprised everybody with the launch of its Ion platform, a concept that was to forever bind an energy-efficient GeForce motherboard GPU with one of Intel's most successful products to date, the Atom processor. Although the platform was appreciated by leading industry players like Microsoft and Google, system vendors were late to announce a product that would take advantage of the features made available by NVIDIA's new pride and joy. However, after months of anticipation, the first NVIDIA Ion-based product made its official debut, with Acer being the first system vendor to announce one.

Although it was initially rumored as the Acer Hornet, the first NVIDIA Ion product was launched as the Aspire Revo, a small-sized nettop capable of providing users with a true home entertainment solution. The desktop computer system featured a design similar to that of Nintendo's much-hyped Wii gaming console, while providing the end user with a choice for a low-power PC, capable of delivering support for some gaming applications, Microsoft Windows Vista and 7 operating systems, as well as 1080p video.

Even if Acer initially outed the product back in early April, the nettop had some difficulties becoming available to the market. Reviews came in late, as they were published towards the end of April. Still, after a few months with Aspire Revo out in the open, Acer can now observe how the collaboration with NVIDIA will provide it with an increased market share in the nettop segment.

On that note, we had our first chance at putting the Ion-based Aspire Revo through its paces earlier this month, an event we waited for with great anticipation. Some of us here at Softpedia were already thinking of our next computer purchase, setting our eyes one some of these new low-power PCs that could provide for an excellent second PC solution. Now, without further ado, we should head on the review itself, pointing some of the pluses and minuses of the low-power PC.
